Certification Support

We provide custom educational mapping by inputting existing education credits onto an easy-to-read grid which identifies the applicable competencies for each of your courses.  This creates a custom plan (or map) so that you always know where you are and which courses would benefit you most on an ongoing basis, no matter what level of certification you are pursuing. Once your custom map is created we can transfer qualified CEU from your transcripts at a rate of $2 per CEU.

Students should be aware that the Florida Certification Board (FCB) grants certification at various levels based on multiple aspects of a person’s experience, knowledge and background.

Certification Levels:
  CAP - Certified Addiction Professional
  CAC - Certified Addiction Counselor
  CAS - Certified Addiction Specialist
  CRSS - Certified Recovery Support Specialist
Each certification level requires that the applicant meet specific criteria in each of the following areas:
  • Formalized Education/Degree – criteria range from GED level to requirement for a Bachelor degree;
  • Experience – criteria include hours of direct service in an addiction setting;
  • Supervision – criteria include hours of “on the job” supervision a person receives from a qualified professional in specific areas;
  • Education** – criteria include specific contact hours of education designated as addiction, counseling, prevention or ethics;
  • Examination – all applicants must pass the Florida specific written exam; CAP and CAPP*** levels also take International written exams. Oral exams are NO longer required by Florida and many other IC&RC boards.

** NTI courses are approved to meet FCB Education requirements.
*** Name change for Certified Addiction Prevention Professionals, CAPP. New name is Certified Prevention Professional, CPP.

Individuals who believe that they have met all FCB requirements in the above areas must complete an application process referred to as “submitting a Portfolio.” Students are responsible for completing their own Portfolio process.

Upon acceptance of your Portfolio/application, FCB will authorize you to sit for the appropriate exam.

Specific questions related to individual qualifications and/or the certification process should be addressed to:
